The Australian Shepherd is a well-balanced working dog, size does not diminish this characteristic. They possess strong herding and guarding instincts. They are intelligent, versatile, and easily trained: performing their assigned tasks with enthusiasm. They can be reserved with strangers but do not exhibit shyness. For these reasons, socialization and room to run to expend energy is necessary for this breed.


They are well-balanced in size and bone, being slightly longer than tall. They are attentive, and animated, showing strength and stamina combined with agility. They have a coat of moderate length and coarseness, with varying colors and variety according to the specimen. An identifying characteristic is a docked bobtail. In each sex, masculinity and femininity are well-defined.


Size guidelines are as follows:

Standard:  height for both male and female is 18-23”  to top of the withers

Miniature:  height for both female and male is 14-18”  to top of the withers

Toy:  height for both male and female is 10 -14”  to top of the withers
